Four years in the research and writing, Rolling Up Their Sleeves is the most important project in Barossa’s food scene for more than two decades.  It captures the stories of the remarkable women in our history, the recipes they used to build a community and perpetuates their legacy in a book that honours our rich regional culture.  Part cookbook, part social history, this book weaves storytelling and food in equal measure, perpetuating our heritage and passing it forward to a new generation.

Description

“This book is such a tribute to the women who came before us and their legacy is honoured by Sheralee Menz and Marieke Ashmore, our two enthusiastic, tenacious ‘Barossa Girls’, who have indeed rolled up their sleeves to keep historic recipes and skills alive. The stories, the recipes, the seasonal connections and the history, all bound together in a polished and professional publication. I admire everything about this beautifully produced book”   Maggie Beer

One of Australia’s first community cookbooks, The Barossa Cookery Book, was compiled in 1917 as a war fundraiser.  Reworked in 1932, it was reborn in a format that has become iconic.  More than 100 years and 35 reprints later, it remains a powerful symbol of generosity and resilience.

Inspired by the remarkable history of the book and the way its frugal and seasonal recipes continue to resonate, Those Barossa Girls, Sheralee Menz and Marieka Ashmore, embarked on a journey to learn more. As they mapped out its history they were drawn into a close and inspiring group of women.

Rolling Up Their Sleeves is the result of Those Barossa Girls delving into archives and family interviews, then testing and translating recipes for a contemporary generation. It is a modern cookbook that re-presents classic recipes and, through personal profiles, honours a group of dedicated and open-hearted women.

If you already own a copy of the Barossa Cookery Book you will love this companion.  Part cookbook, part social history, this book weaves storytelling and food in equal measure, perpetuating our heritage and passing it forward to a new generation.
